Golan Group's Maritime Security Program Expands
Golan Group reported that it plans to expand its program of anti-terrorism security on the high seas.
“Several times over the past year we’ve quietly placed tactical security teams on board a cruise ship,” said Thomas Pearson, head of operations for Golan Group’s maritime program. “In every instance, the passengers welcomed our presence but more importantly we filled a void in countering terror threats to their vacation,” he added.
According to Pearson, for the past year Golan Group has positioned 3 and 4-person teams of trained security specialists on selected itineraries of Oceania Cruises. Virtually all of the team members are trained in Israeli special security tactics which were adapted to maritime applications, Pearson noted.
Golan’s maritime service was launched in the wake of published news reports in November 2005 citing an attack by Somali pirates of an American luxury cruise ship off the Horn of Africa. Swift action by the crew of the 440-foot Seaborn Spirit avoided further confrontation with two speed boats firing automatic weapons, the reports said.
Pearson says there are well over 100 cruise ships sailing on all the seven seas. “Each cruise line has some type of security program in place, however we take it to the next level and introduce techniques for thwarting terror-related attacks,” he said.
